Barbie's 50th anniversary

2009 was Barbie's 50th year in her long career !
Before the year totally ends, I'd like to make this thread to share our experiences around the most popular fashion doll !
Since this site is all about doll dressing, I guess you guys must have interest over the subject ! LOL

                      http://capitolb.files.wordpress.com/2009/03/barbie-50th-anniversary.jpg
Barbie 50th year anniversary celebration doll

So I'll go first :
As far as I can remember, I've always loved Barbie ! But being a boy, my parents would never buy me one of course.
I still managed to have a Ken instead :

                          http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3075/2654524058_79494fd8ea.jpg?v=0
That's him ! I still have him after all these years, but I lost his outfit...

Anyway I was fortunate enough to have a sister, and I could borrow her Barbie dolls ! (many thanks Lid' for your generosity LOL)
My favorite one of hers was certainly the Pink & Pretty Barbie, I absolutely loved her multi function outfit plus she was gorgeous ^^ :

                          http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3611/3341792003_b6f449b1df.jpg

The only thing I didn't like about Barbie is her lack of articulations, and the fact that we only got the blonde ones in France in those days !
I've kept my interest in dolls since then, and while a teenager, I managed to buy my first own Barbies ! It was not to play anymore, but I started a little collection.
I still have them, and I still buy some from time to time, but it would need more time or space ! Now there are even more fashion dolls lines, targeted towards adults, and photos from collectors on the internet is something I really like to see !
(from time to time I try to take some pics too, but I'm certainly not as talented as some others ! ^^)

Doll designer would have been an absolute dream job for me, and I admire people like Bob Mackie or Robert Best who make some amazing Barbie designs.
So becoming designer of Miss bimbo is totally a dream-come-true to me, for each theme it's like I'm creating new dolls, with new outfits and accessories !

Re: Barbie's 50th anniversary

Most of mine were hand-me-downs from my cousins. The were the 80's ones with zero defining features, no clothes and frizzy messes of hair. The only ones I can remember being bought were diving Barbie whose legs turned black like a wetsuit in water- I used to make her dalmatian Barbie, hair cut Barbie, was very upset when I realised that her hair grew back because it was a wig and hair beads Barbie who was my favourite up to the point that I got rid of them all due to her brown hair and fringe. I think that was when they started making Barbie have different looks, rather than generic long blond hair.

I remember when I was a young child. My friend gave me her Barbie's. I ripped all their heads off and buried them in the backyard.

Oh I used to love Barbie. I remember the hours of fun I had with her dressing her up and making up my own little stories that she and other barbies acted out.
I really want to play with a Barbie now smile

Ha, mine too!  Although sometimes she would slap Skipper around.  My Barbie would play the part of the jealous old hag, and Skipper was the teen tart.

Re: Barbie's 50th anniversary

One Christmas I got the barbie dream boat..

Flash non detect

I was ecstatic. That Christmas I had strep throat really bad but when I opened the barbie boat I totally forgot I was even sick. I used to use the blender as a jacuzzi lmao..

Sadly my mom threw the boat away when my little brother decided to fill the pool with maple syrup! It made it sticky and attracted ants even after my mom tried cleaning it. sad In fact, my brother and my stupid cousin broke three easy bake ovens, one of them the same year that my brother filled the barbie boat pool with syrup! I still haven't had my vengeance.

My barbies happened to have a lot of sex too.  Oh well.  However, my very first and most adored barbie was Peaches and Cream Barbie.  Ken would always take her on the most glamorous dates.  Secretly I played barbies until I was like 14.

The 50th Anniversary doll looks like a medieval warrior. I like the pink and pretty doll's sleeves... they're real big

I used to keep my friends barbies in my locker but I gave them back because I couldn't fit my numchucks in there anymore

Re: Barbie's 50th anniversary

To be honest, a few years ago, I didn't understand how a grown-up man could have an interest for barbie dolls. According to me it was the sign that this kind of person didn't want to grow and had a big psychological problem.

Thanks to you, Stephane I understood that my prejudges were totally a non sense.
I understood that you can collect barbie dolls as a grown up man and be responsible in real life, that you can normally socialize , that you can have a succesful job, that you can love...

When I was a child I loved barbie dolls too. My schoolmates wanted me to feel guilty. They said that I was a boy so I hadn't to play with this sort of toys. And it worked.
So I got rid of this entertainment. Barbie Dolls were definitly not for me... because  sadly i was a boy.

This passion of dolls, the ancient frustration and the guiltiness were sleeping inside of me and when I met men who collect barbie dolls it was a problem. Subconsciously, I was obviously frustrated and I couldn't bear a person close to me who could wake up in me the ashamed thought about my childhood passion : barbie dolls.

I had a lot of work to do inside of me to assume all this sad past story around barbies dolls. I had just to meet the persons who could help me to accept what I have been liking inside of me for a so long time. This persons had to help me to know why I liked dolls when I was a child.
I had a lot of work to do to assume what I was,  to accept what others are...

Thanks to you Stephane it's done. http://www5.missbimbo.com/forum/img/smilies/bisou.gif

My sister had that barbie big_smile  Now it is looks like crap because I used to play with it.  There was a reason I wasn't  allowed to play with anything of hers, I destroyed everything.  They just came out with a new version of that, as they have been re-releasing the old barbies for part of the 50th anniversary.

I have always loved Barbies, not so much now, but I used to play with them all the time.  I would spend most of the time setting up the house though, then I would always have the same storyline of a Cinderella barbie is homeless clothes meeting Ken who was rich and they would fall in love then I would get bored with that and put everything away again.

I once got a barbie wig and I would put them on Ken and cross dress him.

I saw this Barbie at Wal-mart last night for $25.. I thought about getting it for my daughter but she's only 2 so she wouldn't appreciate how cool that dress is.

http://inyourfaces.com/barbie%2050th.jpg

Plus she's got an Ariel Barbie and is getting Sleeping Beauty and Snow White for Christmas. smile Next year I'm going to see about getting her a doll house or a boat like I had when I was a kid.

When I was kid I had a big collection of Barbies but they didn't last until today cause most of them had her hair cut by me and stuff and the ones who still in good conditions I gave them to poor children.

This lol but I had Cindy's too and they would either want to steal Ken from Barbie and skipper or start a threesome wink
I still have three I think up in the attic one is properly clothed the other two are hairless and naked.
But when I was little I loved barbie I had the wedding dress costume, the car, the horses and pony's, the lil one room function sets. I used to save all my pocket money each month and go to Hamley's or Beatties and buy a different Barbie doll and new outfit. Awwww I miss those days sad

Gahhhhh I just found a pic of my first ever Barbie ! http://www.1000barbies.com/019/SUC50631.JPG urgh i hated that dress and never used it.

Re: Barbie's 50th anniversary

I love Barbie coeur

Like Patina, I also played barbies long long time, til the age of 12. Me and my friend used to spend hours and hours playing barbies. I had like 13 barbie dolls yikes but only one of them was my favourite (too bad I can't find a pic), and I used to make them clothes myself, knitted cardigans, knitted hats and scarfs; I even made some bathing suits smile And I had one Ken. So my barbie (I called her Cindy) and my friend's Ken were a couple and my friend's barbie (Carolina) and my Ken were a couple lol

God, I loved playing barbies. lol

Re: Barbie's 50th anniversary

does anyone else think that the new barbies you can buy now compared to the barbie we had  15 years ago look like they have had a little botox around the eyes?
or is it just me. hehee
i remember my barbies. i apparently took all there clothes off and left them naked, then my brother would come and dress them up again. XD
ohh. and one year when i was 4 i got a big barbie car with a bbq and everything. but i had to get rid of it like a month later because my sister was born. and there was too many small parts!
im still very angry about that now and hold a small grudge against my sister. haha.
